About Melanie

Melanie Stratton Lopez is a seasoned plaintiff-side trial lawyer with extensive experience litigating complex, high-stakes workplace cases in federal court, with particular expertise in whistleblower protection. She represents employees and professionals who face retaliation for reporting unsafe, unlawful, or unethical conduct and brings disciplined judgment to every case—developed through years of frontline enforcement, defense-side practice, and strategic advisory work—allowing her to evaluate evidence, assess risk, and pursue the course that best serves her clients’ goals.

Before entering plaintiff-side practice, Melanie served as a Senior Trial Attorney at the U.S. Department of Labor, where she litigated extensively in federal district courts across the Southeast. Her work spanned OSHA, the FLSA, FMLA, Title VII, and federal whistleblower statutes, including complex human trafficking and systemic wage-and-hour cases. She independently managed matters from investigation through trial and led a trial team that secured a $12.5 million corporate-wide settlement against a major national employer. Melanie has taken countless depositions, worked closely with expert witnesses, and led complex motions practice against some of the largest companies in the country.

Earlier in her career, Melanie practiced at a globally respected Am Law defense firm, advising executives and institutions on compliance, investigations, and employment disputes. That experience now strengthens her plaintiff-side strategy by enabling her to anticipate employer defenses, understand internal decision-making, and negotiate effectively on behalf of professionals and workers.

In addition to her litigation practice, Melanie routinely advises state and local government enforcement agencies on labor enforcement design and implementation. She is also a sought-after trainer of enforcement attorneys nationwide and, in 2025, trained 70 California state labor enforcement attorneys in litigation and strategic enforcement. She serves on the advisory council of Labor South: Center for Working Class Studies and contributes to the broader labor and employment law community through policy, training, and education.

Melanie is a recognized national authority on workplace law. She is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Fifth Edition of Bloomberg Law’s Occupational Safety and Health Law treatise, a frequent speaker at the American Bar Association, and a trusted public voice on labor and employment issues, with commentary featured in USA Today, Bloomberg Law, Law360, and PRX’s The World.

A bilingual Mexican American attorney and the first lawyer in her family, Melanie earned both her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She credits her grandparents—migrant farmworkers from South Texas who later built a successful barbershop—with shaping her drive to support low-income and vulnerable workers. Her lifelong commitment to workplace fairness spans roles and regions, from rural North Carolina to garment factories in Latin America to federal courtrooms and executive offices. Outside of work, she’s a mom to a curious seven-year-old, is married to a mission-driven filmmaker, and enjoys travel and pickleball.

I had been an HR professional for 30 years when I was questionably discharged from my employer. It was a painful and confusing experience. I had always been on the employer’s side of disputes. I talked withJosh Van Kampen and he helped me understand the realistic possibilities to fairly settle the situation with my former employer. The staff at Van Kampen Law made it easy to pull all the right documentation together. They got me 6months’ severance pay with fully paid benefits. That gave me the time and confidence to start my own business.

Thank you Josh and Team!
